In a recent statement, Congress Member of Parliament, representing Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor, discussed the stance of the Congress party regarding ‘Palestinian rights’ in the midst of the Israel-Hamas conflict. Tharoor emphasized that the party’s statement should not be considered a comprehensive view of the issue.
He expounded on his position, noting, “It is by no means a sort of comprehensive view of the issue.” Tharoor acknowledged that the BJP had been making a political statement and emphasized that the situation regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict was continually evolving. He stressed that their reactions and positions would likewise evolve, citing a forthcoming, more detailed statement on the matter.
Tharoor shed light on the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, where the focus had primarily been on domestic issues, particularly the socio-economic and caste census. He revealed that the issue surrounding ‘Palestinian rights’ had been briefly addressed, and it had not been the primary topic of discussion. Tharoor referenced Rahul Gandhi’s post-CWC meeting press conference, in which he had mainly addressed domestic issues and had not extensively mentioned the Israel-Hamas situation. Nonetheless, Tharoor underscored that a more comprehensive statement on the matter was forthcoming.
The Congress Working Committee, in a statement issued on Monday, had called for an “immediate cease-fire” between Israeli forces and the Hamas militant group. Additionally, the CWC expressed its longstanding support for the rights of the Palestinian people to land, self-government, and a life of dignity and respect. The statement also called for negotiations to address all outstanding issues contributing to the current conflict.
