China has achieved a historic milestone by commencing commercial operations of the world’s first fourth-generation, gas-cooled nuclear reactor power plant. The Shidao Bay plant, located in eastern Shandong province, marks a significant advancement with its use of two high-temperature reactors cooled by gas instead of pressurized water, resulting in enhanced efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Key Features:

– Shidao Bay plant powered by next-generation gas-cooled reactors.

– Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) can be utilized beyond electricity generation for heating, desalination, and industrial steam applications.

This development is part of China’s strategy to reduce dependence on coal-fired power plants and foreign technologies. Over 90% of the plant’s equipment is of Chinese design, showcasing the nation’s commitment to technological self-sufficiency.

Proponents believe that small modular reactors, like those employed at Shidao Bay, can play a central role in global decarbonization and energy transition. Their compact and modular design reduces costs and construction time, offering a versatile solution.

The International Atomic Energy Agency reports that over 80 SMR projects are currently under development in 18 countries, reflecting the global interest and potential impact of this innovative technology.
