In a strategic initiative, the commerce ministry has formed a dedicated task force to identify and resolve trade barriers obstructing Indian exporters in foreign countries. This proactive measure is aimed at facilitating increased market access for domestic goods, particularly in situations where exports face challenges such as prolonged registration processes and unreasonable standards in various nations.
A senior official stated, “We have constituted a task force within the ministry where we will be looking at the trade barriers and technical barriers. The ministry has been focusing on how to improve systems and standards.”
Additionally, the ministry is actively exploring opportunities to enhance Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) with different countries. This approach aims to align product standards with the importing countries’ requirements, thereby promoting smoother trade relations.
The official emphasized that standards for goods and services should serve the purpose of fostering global trade rather than acting as non-tariff barriers.
A recent report by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) underscored the urgent need for India to address non-trade barriers (NTBs) promptly. It urged the country to expedite the removal of obstacles faced by domestic exporters in key markets like the US, China, and Japan. The report suggested upgrading domestic systems for rejected products and considering retaliatory measures against unreasonable standards or rules impeding exports from India.
Key Indian exports facing significant barriers include chillies, tea, basmati rice, milk, poultry, bovine meat, fish, and chemical products to the EU. Similar challenges are encountered with exports to Japan, China, and the US, indicating the widespread impact of non-tariff measures.
This proactive approach by the commerce ministry aligns with the goal of achieving a one trillion dollar outbound shipment target for goods by 2030. As India navigates complex global trade dynamics, addressing non-tariff barriers becomes paramount for sustained economic growth.
