New Delhi, The Supreme Court made it clear that its directives regarding the use of firecrackers are not limited to the Delhi-NCR region but extend to all states across the country. In response to various petitions seeking a nationwide ban on the sale and use of firecrackers, the Court has underscored the need for state governments to play an active role in controlling air and noise pollution.
The bench, consisting of Justice A.S. Bopanna and Justice M.M. Sundresh, addressed a series of petitions requesting a ban on the sale, purchase, and usage of firecrackers throughout India.
Awareness and Implementation:
The petitioners argued that there exists a common misconception that the Court’s orders are applicable only in Delhi-NCR, emphasizing the necessity to correct this perception. Justice Sundresh pointed out that addressing environmental concerns is not solely the responsibility of the Court, highlighting the importance of collective efforts.
The Supreme Court emphasized that the state of Rajasthan, in particular, must take note of its earlier orders and take proactive measures to mitigate air pollution, especially during festive seasons. The Court stressed the significance of sensitizing the public to the environmental challenges posed by excessive firecracker use.
Continued Enforcement:
In 2018, the Supreme Court imposed a ban on the sale and use of firecrackers, and it has reiterated that these restrictions will remain in effect and will be diligently enforced.
