In alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary stance of “India for AI and AI for India,” India has unveiled plans for the inaugural Global India AI Summit, scheduled for December of this year. Rajeev Chandrasekar, Union Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Electronics & IT, in making the announcement, confirmed that the Global India AI Summit is slated to take place on December 10, 2023.

Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar emphasized the significance of this event, stating, “The Global India AI summit, set for December 10, 2023, will draw influential leaders and participants from the AI and the broader tech ecosystem.” He further expounded, “Our approach to AI is not merely a trend-following endeavor; it reflects our profound belief and unwavering commitment to the understanding that AI will serve as a dynamic catalyst for realizing our goal of a 1 trillion-dollar economy. This endeavor will also foster substantial capabilities within our startup and research ecosystem, with a focus on tangible AI applications that we aim to develop. This summit serves as an auspicious launchpad for us to construct a comprehensive framework encompassing policy, financing, and resources.”

The announcement came on the sidelines of the inaugural release of the IndiaAI report, presented to Minister Chandrasekhar by seven working groups of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY). These working groups meticulously detailed the operational aspects related to the establishment of Centers of Excellence (CoEs) and the institutional framework governing the entire data life cycle, including collection, management, processing, and storage, as overseen by the National Data Management Office (NDMO). The report also contains recommendations on leveraging India’s demographic dividend and capitalizing on its standing as an IT superpower to bolster the penetration of AI skills within the nation. It advocates for the reinforcement of AI compute infrastructure in India, to support AI innovation through strategic public-private partnerships (PPPs).

The report extends recommendations regarding the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme, which seeks to provide financial incentives and design infrastructure support to domestic enterprises, startups, and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

This comprehensive study sought to assess every facet of IndiaAI and pinpoint actionable steps that must be undertaken to realize the overarching vision of “AI for all.”
