A prominent figure within the opposition, hailing from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has been apprehended by Bangladeshi authorities and subsequently incarcerated following a nationwide strike that escalated into violent confrontations with security forces.

Reportedly, the violent clashes during the strike, which transpired on Sunday, claimed the lives of at least three civilians and featured an arson incident in the capital, Dhaka. Dozens of individuals sustained injuries during the course of the strike.

Tragically, a police officer lost his life, and numerous others were wounded when a massive rally, led by tens of thousands of opposition activists, took a violent turn on Saturday. The central demand of the opposition revolves around the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the handover of power to a non-partisan caretaker government, responsible for overseeing the upcoming general elections slated for the following year.

After being held in detention for nearly nine hours, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the Secretary General of the Nationalist Party, led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and serving as the primary political rival to Hasina, was subsequently arrested by the police. The arrest was confirmed by Faruk Hossain, the Deputy Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police responsible for media affairs.

Furthermore, Hossain revealed that an extensive investigation, encompassing approximately 1,300 individuals, is underway regarding the violence that erupted on Saturday. It has been reported in local media that police conducted overnight raids on the residences of various opposition leaders within Dhaka.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was presented before a magistrate’s court late on Sunday, where his request for bail was denied, leading to his committal to prison as part of ongoing legal proceedings associated with charges of vandalism arising from Saturday’s tumultuous events. The police assert that a faction of opposition supporters targeted the official residence of the country’s chief justice during the Saturday protests, and Alamgir has been implicated in connection to this incident.

The Nationalist Party has decried the detention of Alamgir and has announced a three-day road blockade and public transportation disruption throughout the country, set to commence on Tuesday.

Habibur Rahman, the Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, clarified that Alamgir was apprehended for the purpose of questioning and is required by law to appear in court within 24 hours.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan stated that leaders of Zia’s party must bear responsibility for their involvement in the violence, as reported by the United News of Bangladesh agency.

Amid escalating tensions in Bangladesh, dominated by two major dynastic political parties represented by Hasina and Zia, the General Secretary of the ruling party, Obaidul Quader, announced on Sunday that no dialogues will be initiated with the opposition until certain conditions are met, including the exclusion of a caretaker government. The ruling party additionally asserts that Hasina must continue to serve as the head of the government until the elections, and any amendments to the Election Commission are categorically rejected.

As tensions mount, security has been increased in the capital, Dhaka, and on Sunday, at least three vehicles were set ablaze. The United News of Bangladesh agency reported two fatalities in Dhaka, including an opposition activist, while a member of the ruling party perished in the northern district of Lalmonirhat. Widespread vandalism was reported, with at least 42 vehicles damaged in Dhaka and other cities in the northern and northeastern regions of Bangladesh.

As the daylong strike unfolded, more than 100 people sustained injuries in various parts of the country, while the police detained over 200 opposition supporters in Dhaka and seven other districts across Bangladesh.

The European Union and the United States have both urged all parties involved to exercise restraint as tensions continue to escalate ahead of the anticipated national elections, scheduled for January.

Donald Lu, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, declared that Washington will assess all incidents of violence for potential visa restrictions.

The enduring rivalry between Hasina and Zia, which has endured for decades, has placed immense pressure on Hasina’s government in recent months, as the opposition staged predominantly peaceful anti-government demonstrations. Critics and human rights organizations have accused Hasina’s administration of stifling opposition voices, an accusation that authorities vehemently deny.

Prime Minister Hasina, who has emphasized her development agenda, seeks a fourth consecutive term in office. She maintains that the election should be conducted under the auspices of her government, in accordance with constitutional provisions. In contrast, the opposition insists that the election will not be free and fair, despite Hasina’s assurances.

In a recent parliamentary address, the Prime Minister suggested that the United States harbors an intent to unseat her from power at any cost, threatening to impose visa restrictions on those it alleges have obstructed the election process, including members of law enforcement agencies and both ruling and opposition parties.
