In a diplomatic plea, President Mohamed Muizz of the Maldives has formally requested the Indian government to withdraw its military personnel from the island nation, citing potential threats to the democratic fabric of the Maldives. The President, as reported by the Times of India, emphasized that the continued presence of Indian forces could be construed as a disregard for the “democratic will” of the Maldivian people, posing a significant risk to the nation’s democratic future.

President Muizz articulated the strong sentiment among Maldivians, asserting that the populace vehemently opposes the idea of foreign military presence on their soil. Currently, it is India that maintains such a presence, prompting Muizz to call for the withdrawal of military personnel, aligning with the desires of the majority.

In his statement to TOI, President Muizz stated, “Maldivian people have a very clear stance against the idea of foreign military personnel being stationed in the Maldives. Right now, it is India that maintains such a presence in the Maldives. To honor this mandate, I have requested India to return the military personnel.”

The President underscored the potential repercussions if such concerns are not addressed, expressing, “If our partners disregard the will of the great majority of the people of the Maldives, the future of democracy in the country will be in peril.” He contended that the presence of foreign military personnel, without parliamentary approval, contradicts both the letter and spirit of the constitution.

President Muizz, however, conveyed confidence that dialogue would pave the way for a resolution, acknowledging the historical and deep-rooted relationship between India and the Maldives. He highlighted the intensification of ties in various domains such as trade, commerce, investment, and tourism.

Addressing speculations regarding his “pro-China” image, President Muizz clarified, “We will not be ‘anti’ any country or ‘pro’ any country. My government will pursue a ‘pro-Maldives’ policy.” This statement suggests a commitment to maintaining a neutral stance in international relations.

Despite the call for the withdrawal of military forces, the President reiterated support for defense cooperation with India, including collaborative efforts to strengthen the Maldives National Defence Force. He emphasized the long-standing cooperation in the maritime sector, expressing confidence that India’s relationship with the Maldives is founded on shared principles.

Additionally, President Muizz clarified the decision not to renew the hydrographic surveys agreement with the Indian Navy, citing the existence of the Maldives’ own national hydrography agency. He added that while they won’t renew the agreement, the Maldives remains open to seeking support from ‘external partners’ if necessary.

The President’s nuanced statements add layers to the evolving diplomatic dynamics between India and the Maldives, urging careful consideration and diplomatic finesse to navigate the complexities and maintain the historically close ties.
