In a groundbreaking moment at the 72nd Miss Universe pageant, Miss Pakistan, Erica Robin, marked history as the first-ever representative of Pakistan in the competition. During the swimsuit competition on Saturday, Robin made a powerful statement by wearing a burkini, receiving resounding applause from the audience in San Salvador, El Salvador.

Robin’s baby-pink burkini, featuring a shiny neckline that stood out against the pastel fabric, covered most of her body, in contrast to the metallic swimsuits with daring cutouts worn by other contestants. Despite placing in the top 20, Robin’s presence and choice garnered attention and applause for breaking barriers.

In her Miss Universe bio, Robin expressed pride in standing up for her beliefs and values as a young modern Pakistani woman. She acknowledged facing backlash in her country for her decision to compete but remained steadfast in her commitment to represent Pakistan’s rich culture and heritage.

A member of the Christian religious minority in Pakistan, constituting about 1% of the population, Robin utilized her Voice for Change video to advocate for gender equality in the workplace. She also shared her involvement in volunteering at the nonprofit Karachi Down Syndrome Program.

Miss Pakistan was not the sole woman making history at this year’s Miss Universe. Miss Nepal, Jane Dipika Garrett, became the first body-inclusive contestant in the competition. Miss Colombia, Camila Avella, achieved a historic feat as the first married woman and mother to place in the competition since Miss Universe modified its rules in August 2022. Additionally, Miss Portugal, Marina Machete, made history as the first transgender contestant to secure a place in the top 20.

The 72nd Miss Universe pageant proved to be a stage for diversity, breaking stereotypes, and celebrating individuality among contestants.
