BEIJING, In a striking display of career preferences, more than three million individuals participated in China’s annual civil service exam over the weekend, marking a record turnout. This surge reflects the growing inclination of the youth toward secure government positions amidst economic challenges in the private sector.

With persistently high youth unemployment rates in the world’s second-largest economy, the allure of a stable career in the civil service has gained prominence. As private sector job opportunities diminish, an increasing number of individuals view the civil service as a reliable option for job security.

China, grappling with economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic, has implemented various policy measures, including increased financial support for private companies. Despite these efforts, the private sector’s struggle has led many to seek opportunities in the civil service.

The civil service exam, conducted simultaneously in 237 cities across the country, presented a record high of 39,600 vacancies in central government agencies and affiliated institutions. The demand is evident, with an average of 77 candidates vying for each available position, according to the Global Times newspaper.

Social media platforms, such as Weibo, echo sentiments of economic uncertainty, with users expressing concerns about layoffs and business closures. The pursuit of a civil service career is seen as a pragmatic choice to secure employment, even if it means accepting lower earnings.

As the debate over job security intensifies, the civil service has become an increasingly attractive option for individuals navigating the challenges of post-pandemic economic recovery. The government’s emphasis on stability and the growth in civil service opportunities highlight a shifting career landscape in China.
