In the recently unveiled pages of ‘Pranab, My Father: A Daughter Remembers,’ authored by Sharmistha Mukherjee, intriguing insights into the complex dynamics between Pranab Mukherjee and Rahul Gandhi come to light. The book sheds light on Pranab Mukherjee’s profound disapproval of Rahul Gandhi’s actions, particularly focusing on the contentious 2013 ordinance-tearing incident.

According to Sharmistha Mukherjee, her father viewed Rahul Gandhi’s conduct during the ordinance episode as emblematic of the “arrogance” associated with the Gandhi-Nehru lineage, yet lacking the political acumen that distinguished his predecessors. The book suggests that Pranab Mukherjee considered this episode to be the “final nail in the coffin” for the Congress party in the subsequent Lok Sabha polls.

Mukherjee’s criticism extended beyond this specific incident. He reportedly expressed concerns about Rahul Gandhi’s “lack of charisma and political understanding,” identifying these traits as potential obstacles. Sharmistha Mukherjee’s narrative unveils a moment where her father raised questions about Rahul’s ability to run the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) after an incident where a meeting was mistakenly scheduled in the morning instead of the evening.

Pranab Mukherjee, a stalwart in Indian politics who served as India’s finance minister, minister for External Affairs, Defence, Finance, and Commerce, and the 13th president of India (2012 to 2017), passed away on August 31, 2020, at the age of 84.

The book provides a nuanced exploration of Pranab Mukherjee’s perspectives, reflecting not only on specific incidents but also delving into broader issues within the political landscape. As readers traverse the pages, they gain a deeper understanding of the man behind the political figure and the intricate relationships that shaped the political narrative during his time.
