‘If India Produce Turning Tracks, It Will…’: Jonny Bairstow On Upcoming Test Series

In anticipation of the upcoming five-Test series against India, England wicketkeeper batter Jonny Bairstow voices his apprehension about the potential use of turning pitches by India. Bairstow suggests that such pitches may negate some of India’s strength in seam attack.

Having faced a 1-3 defeat in the 2021 Test series against India on spin-friendly tracks, Bairstow acknowledges India’s ability to produce different pitches. He points out the potency of India’s seam attack and emphasizes that the effectiveness of their seamers should not be overlooked.

“I’m sure the pitches will turn: it’s whether or not they’ll turn from day one, which potentially negates a bit of their strength in their seam attack,” Bairstow states, highlighting the strategic decision India has regarding pitch conditions.

The 34-year-old cricketer prefers not to overthink the challenge of confronting spin bowling in India. Reflecting on the previous series, he notes the quality spinners, including Axar and Ashwin, but stresses the need to adapt to changing conditions.

Bairstow also underlines that the responsibility for taking wickets lies not only on the spinners but on the entire bowling attack. With the series approaching, he remains uncertain about the wicketkeeper’s role, as Ben Foakes earns a recall to the England team.

As England, the defending champions, prepare for the five-Test series starting on January 25 in Hyderabad, Bairstow expresses his determination to contribute to the team’s success, whether with the bat, as a wicketkeeper, or in any other role.
