BENGALURU: Renowned alumnus Prof. Dr Anjana Devi, who earned her stripes at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), has assumed the role of Director at the Institute for Materials Chemistry, Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research (IMF) in Dresden, Germany.

In a historic move, she becomes the first IISc alumnus to hold such a prestigious position in Germany, officially taking the reins on January 1, 2024. Concurrently, Prof. Anjana Devi has also been appointed Chair of Materials Chemistry in the Faculty of Chemistry and Food Chemistry at the Technical University of Dresden. Presently, she is actively engaged with the Fraunhofer Institute in Duisburg.

Prof. Anjana expressed her view that Germany is emerging as the next Silicon Valley, providing stiff competition to the United States. She highlighted the burgeoning opportunities for students, especially from India, in fields such as semiconductors, with many universities forging partnerships through Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Indian counterparts.

Addressing her new responsibilities, Prof. Anjana emphasized her commitment to fostering independent research and attracting Indian students for advanced studies and research programs. She acknowledged the strength of Indian students in theoretical knowledge but stressed the importance of gaining practical and laboratory experience. She urged students to break free from apprehensions and embrace independent thinking, a trend encouraged in foreign universities.

Prof. Anjana Devi, aged 55, pursued studies in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Materials Science at Mangalore University until 1991. She earned her Ph.D. in Materials Science at the Materials Research Centre, IISc. Over the years, her illustrious career has seen her contributions recognized with awards and grants, including an honorary doctorate from Aalto University in Finland in 2020.

Her latest role involves leading the Nanostructured Sensor Materials (NSM) research group at the Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems in Duisburg.
