In a determined effort, the Indian government, under the leadership of Navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, is actively working towards securing the return of retired naval officers sentenced to death in Qatar. The Navy chief conveyed this commitment during a press conference ahead of Navy Day on December 4.
Admiral Kumar assured, “There is total support and effort being put in by the government,” highlighting the comprehensive measures taken to address the situation.
The Navy chief emphasized that close collaboration with relevant agencies is underway to safeguard the interests and welfare of the veterans facing the death penalty in Qatar. He underscored the significance of ensuring the well-being of these veterans, emphasizing their role as esteemed ex-naval officers.
In October, a court in Qatar pronounced the death penalty for seven retired naval officers and a sailor. In a positive development, the court of appeal in Qatar accepted the Indian government’s application against the death sentence in November.
The Indian government is actively engaged with Qatari authorities to find a resolution to the issue, recognizing its impact on bilateral ties. The Navy chief reiterated, “I want to reassure you that the Indian government is putting all-out efforts to ensure that they are brought back.”
The veterans, including Captain Navtej Gill and Commander Purnendu Tiwari, had distinguished careers in the Navy, with accolades such as the President’s Gold Medal and Pravasi Bhartiya Samman Award. The Navy is dedicated to ensuring their welfare and a secure return.
