In an unusual turn of weather events, Bengaluru has experienced its warmest December in the past decade, with an average temperature of 23.7 degrees Celsius—two degrees higher than the normal December average of 21.6 degrees Celsius. This weather anomaly marks another record for the “Garden City,” known for its moderate climate.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru, reported that the typical minimum and maximum temperatures for December in Bengaluru are 16.4 degrees Celsius and 26.9 degrees Celsius, respectively. However, the recent average temperature surpassed these norms.
The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) revealed in its daily bulletin that Bidar District recorded an average minimum temperature of 13.4 degrees Celsius. Geographically, around 71% of the state observed minimum temperatures ranging from 14 to 18 degrees Celsius, with some districts experiencing even lower temperatures.
On the other end of the spectrum, Udupi District registered an average maximum temperature of 34.2 degrees Celsius, with several other districts witnessing temperatures in the range of 32 to 34 degrees Celsius.
This uncharacteristic warmth adds to Bengaluru’s recent weather records, including the wettest April in seven years, the coolest day of May in a decade, the wettest June in ten years, the highest daily rainfall in July in 14 years, the wettest September day since 2014, and the coldest October day in over a decade.
As Bengaluru residents navigate this unexpected warmth, meteorological experts continue to monitor and analyze the city’s evolving climate patterns.
