Patna, Bihar’s commendable afforestation initiatives under the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan were lauded on the global stage at the ongoing COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai. State Environment Secretary Bandana Preyashi and Director (Ecology) Surendra Singh presented a comprehensive overview of Bihar’s green endeavors and its commitment to climate resilience.

In the session on ‘Building Climate Resilience,’ Surendra Singh outlined Bihar’s afforestation activities, providing insights into ongoing programs, achieved results, challenges faced, and future plans. This detailed presentation at the Dubai Climate Summit highlighted the state’s proactive stance in combating climate change.

Top officials from the state’s environment department participated in the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28), underscoring Bihar’s dedication to sustainable practices and its role in addressing global climate challenges.

Experts acknowledged Bihar’s pioneering measures for climate change resilience, placing the state ahead of many regions worldwide. Piyush Tripathi from the World Resources Institute – India commended Bihar for initiating a long-term low-carbon development pathway, emphasizing the state’s commitment to sustainable practices.

Tripathi highlighted the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in February 2021, aimed at developing climate-resilient and low-carbon development pathways.

Over the past two years, a technical consortium of internationally renowned organizations, including WRI India, has collaborated on an extensive data collection drive to formulate a long-term climate strategy for Bihar.

The COP28 Summit in Dubai provides a platform for global leaders, climate experts, and stakeholders to discuss and formulate strategies for addressing climate change. Bihar’s recognition at this summit reflects its proactive efforts in adopting sustainable and climate-resilient practices.
