In a recent address to the Matua community at Thakurnagar, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Ajay Mishra, announced that the final draft of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) is anticipated to be ready by March 30, 2024. The BJP MP assured the community that their citizenship rights are secure under the Act passed by the Parliament in December 2019.

Addressing the gathering, Mishra emphasized that citizens of the Matua community will enjoy full rights, and no action can be taken against them in the absence of proper documents, a provision included in the Act. Minister of State for Shipping and Bongaon BJP MP, Santanu Thakur, also attended the event.

Mishra stated that the process to implement CAA has gained momentum in the past couple of years, and while some issues are being resolved, he affirmed that by March next year, the final draft of the CAA is expected to be ready for enforcement.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act aims to grant Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who entered India before December 31, 2014.

Responding to Mishra’s statements, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen asserted that Trinamool Congress has ensured the rights of Matuas as citizens of the country. He criticized the BJP, claiming that they only remember Matuas and the CAA during elections, predicting the rejection of the saffron party in the upcoming elections.
