In a recent announcement, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde revealed that the long-awaited Mumbai Coastal Road is anticipated to be finalized by May 2024. Addressing concerns about the increased project cost, CM Shinde clarified that delays did not contribute to the financial escalation; rather, alterations to the alignment were made following demands from Worli fishermen.

The Coastal Road project, initiated in October 2018, has faced various challenges, including court orders, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, and protests from Koli fishermen. Despite these setbacks, CM Shinde emphasized that the delays did not result in additional financial burdens.

“The increase is mainly due to an increase in central goods and services tax, additional works such as the proposed 120-meter span in pillars for allowing boats to go,” explained CM Shinde in response to questions raised by MLCs Anil Parab and Satyajeet Tambe.

While CM Shinde did not address the issue of toll collection on the Coastal Road in his written reply to the legislative council, he assured that the project was progressing rapidly and would be open to the public by May 31, 2024. The Coastal Road at Worli is expected to connect seamlessly to the Bandra Worli Sea Link through a dedicated bridge.

As Mumbai eagerly anticipates the completion of this crucial infrastructure project, the chief minister’s assurance sheds light on the timeline for its inauguration. The Coastal Road is poised to become a significant asset for the city, offering improved connectivity and addressing long-standing transportation challenges.
