In a supposed barb directed at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently made an inadvertent slip of the tongue during a campaign rally in Chhattisgarh, resulting in an unexpected backlash against his own party. While attempting to criticize the BJP-led central government for its alleged favoritism towards the wealthy elite, Rahul Gandhi erroneously insinuated that the Chief Minister of the Congress-governed state was in the service of the industrialist Gautam Adani, who is the proprietor of the Adani Group.

“You relentlessly serve the interests of Adani 24X7. Similarly, the Chief Minister in your administration also appears to be working on behalf of individuals like Adani. In contrast, we are dedicated to the welfare of farmers, laborers, and small-scale entrepreneurs. This constitutes the fundamental distinction,” expressed the Congress leader, amidst the presence of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and other prominent Congress figures at the rally.

Subsequently, the Bharatiya Janata Party seized the opportunity to highlight Rahul Gandhi’s statement, with Amit Malviya, the head of the party’s IT cell, suggesting that the Congress leader had inadvertently “acknowledged” the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister’s allegiance to Adani. Malviya posted this interpretation on X (formerly Twitter), accompanied by a video clip of Rahul Gandhi’s speech.

This incident adds an intriguing dimension to the ongoing political discourse, further emphasizing the nuances of political rhetoric and the potential consequences of linguistic missteps in the public sphere.
