In the border area between India and Nepal, an illicit drug trade is thriving, with smugglers from Bihar sending narcotics, including dangerous drugs and marijuana, across the border. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel are closely monitoring the situation, apprehending traffickers regularly. Just recently, SSB intercepted a significant consignment of marijuana destined for Indian territory.
The illicit activities extend to both sides of the border, as Nepalese police have apprehended 3,445 drug traffickers involved in drug trade between the two nations in the last six months. The seized individuals include 2,758 Nepali men, 144 Nepali women, 133 foreign men, and 10 foreign women. The charges range from possession of ganja, charas, heroin, opium, cocaine, and other controlled substances to engaging in illegal drug trafficking.
Highlighting specific cases, an incident near the pillar number 190/01 on the India-Nepal border saw SSB intercepting four smugglers transporting ganja into Indian territory. One trafficker was apprehended with 102 kilograms of marijuana, intended for distribution in safe locations within the Indian territory. The police efforts in Nepal have also resulted in the arrest of thousands of drug traffickers, emphasizing the ongoing collaboration between the two nations to curb this menace.
In response to these challenges, heightened vigilance and joint patrolling efforts are being conducted by both Indian and Nepalese security forces in the border areas. The recent interception of drug traffickers and the confiscation of significant drug consignments underscore the need for sustained efforts to curb illegal activities along the India-Nepal border.
