In a significant weather event, Cyclone Michaung crossed the south Andhra Pradesh coast, impacting regions between Nellore, Prakasam, and Bapatla districts. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reports a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph during the landfall.

Current Status: Moving North, Expected Weakening

Michaung is forecasted to move nearly northwards and gradually weaken into a Cyclonic storm over the next two hours, according to the IMD. The storm has already caused intense to extremely heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh, affecting normal life.

Impact on People and Infrastructure

DMK MP Kanimozhi acknowledges the severity of the situation, mentioning over 33 cm of rainfall in the past two days. However, due to government preparedness, evacuations have been carried out, and shelters are in place. Despite the challenges, efforts are underway to restore power and aid affected areas.

Casualties and Relief Efforts

Tragically, the cyclone has resulted in a death toll of 12, with 11 reported injuries in rain-related incidents. Rescue operations, including personnel on fishing boats and farm tractors, are underway. Chennai Police are distributing food items to those affected by waterlogging in the city.

Hourly Updates from IMD

The latest updates from IMD indicate that Michaung is presently making landfall with a wind speed ranging from 90-100 kmph. The landfall process is expected to conclude within the next two hours. High tidal waves have been reported in Bapatla, adding to the challenges faced by residents.

Precautionary Measures and Authorities’ Response

The landfall process, expected to take around two hours, has prompted the deployment of NDRF and SDRF, with the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority ensuring all necessary precautionary measures are in place.
