In November, airlines compensated 2.69 lakh passengers for delays and 40 thousand for cancellations. As frustrations rise, it’s crucial to understand your rights as a passenger.

Denied Boarding: Know Your Options

If the airline overbooks and denies your boarding against your will, they must arrange an alternate flight within an hour or compensate you with 200% of the booked one-way fare, capped at INR 10,000. The penalty increases to 400% if the alternate flight is more than 24 hours later, capped at INR 20,000.

Cancellation Chaos: What You Deserve

Airlines must inform passengers of cancellations at least two weeks before travel, offering an alternate flight or refund. If canceled between two weeks and 24 hours before departure, the airline must provide alternatives or a refund. Passengers not informed or missing connecting flights are entitled to compensation and accommodations.

Flight Delays: Navigating the Wait

For delays beyond two hours, airlines should offer refreshments or meals. Delays beyond three hours for specific block times or over 24 hours merit accommodation. However, loopholes exist, and airlines are exempt from compensation for factors like Air Traffic Control, security, or natural disasters.

Despite regulations, transparency remains a challenge, with airlines exploiting loopholes. As a passenger, understanding your rights is crucial in navigating the complexities of air travel.
