New Delhi, The government has withdrawn three new criminal law bills aimed at revamping the criminal justice system in the country. Introduced in the Lok Sabha in August, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill, 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill, 2023, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023 are now set to be reintroduced with amendments based on recommendations from the parliamentary standing committee.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during the bills’ introduction, emphasized that the focus of these legislative changes is to provide justice rather than mere punishment. The bills were intended to replace three British-era laws—the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively.

The bills were referred to a select committee for detailed evaluation, with the committee expected to submit its report within three months. The new versions will be crafted based on the committee’s recommendations.
