New Delhi – In a significant diplomatic move, India has raised questions about the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) inability to effectively resolve the ongoing Ukraine conflict, labeling it as “completely ineffective.” Secretary (West) of the Ministry of External Affairs, Sanjay Verma, delivered a compelling speech during the UN Security Council Open Debate on the Ukraine conflict, expressing India’s deep concern over the situation in the war-torn nation.
During the debate, India posed two critical questions: “Are we anywhere near a possible solution acceptable? And if not, why is it that the UN system, and particularly its principal organ, this very UN Security Council, mandated to primarily maintain international peace and security, rendered completely ineffective to the resolution of the ongoing conflict?”
Verma stressed the urgent need for reforming and reinventing outdated multilateral structures to enhance their credibility. He emphasized that the path to peace in Ukraine requires dialogue and diplomacy, not escalation.
Furthermore, Verma underscored the importance of upholding international law, the principles of the UN Charter, and respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states. He urged for open diplomatic channels to be maintained, highlighting the detrimental effects of the conflict on global food, fuel, and fertilizer prices, particularly affecting countries in the Global South.
India’s G20 Presidency was instrumental in addressing economic challenges faced by developing nations, including solutions for countries grappling with debt distress.
Verma concluded by echoing Prime Minister Modi’s vision, stating, “This is not an era of war,” emphasizing the necessity of international cooperation and development over conflict.
India’s strong stance at the UNSC underlines the nation’s commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and its role as a global advocate for diplomacy and cooperation.
