Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk’s recent social media post expressing surprise at India’s lack of a permanent seat in the United Nation Security Council (UNSC) has sparked interest from the United States, Hindustan Times reported.
The 52-year-old tech mogul who is set to visit India this month, believes that powerful nations are hesitant to relinquish power as he suggested that it was “absurd” that India doesn’t have a permanent seat at the UNSC.
“At some point, there needs to be a revision of the UN bodies,” Musk said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter in January. “Problem is that those with excess power don’t want to give it up.
“India not having a permanent seat on the Security Council, despite being the most populous country on Earth, is absurd. Africa collectively should also have a permanent seat imo.”
During a press conference on Wednesday, US State department principal deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel highlighted the need for reforms in the United Nations bodies, including the UNSC, adding that he doesn’t have any specifics.
The UNSC comprises 15 member states including five permanent members with veto power and 10 non-permanent members elected for two terms by the UN General Assembly.
The five states with veto power include the United Kingdom, the US, France, and Russia.
For years, India has tried to score a permanent seat in the UNSC but has failed. However, it might end up in the group of permanent members as many countries have backed the idea
