New Delhi, In a resolute display of sovereignty, India has unequivocally declared that matters concerning Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are unequivocally “an internal affair” and rebuffed any comments or interference from Pakistan. These assertive statements followed Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister, Anwarul Haq Kakar, raising the Kashmir issue during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Speaking on behalf of India at the General Assembly’s second committee, Petal Gahlot, First Secretary, did not mince words. She accused Pakistan of being a habitual offender in misusing this esteemed global platform to propagate unfounded and malicious allegations against India. Ms. Gahlot argued that Pakistan resorts to such tactics to divert international attention from its deplorable record on human rights.
India did not stop at asserting its territorial integrity; it also took Pakistan to task for what it labeled as “the world’s worst human rights records,” especially concerning minority communities and women. Ms. Gahlot, with steely resolve, urged Pakistan to first address its internal issues before pointing fingers at the world’s largest democracy.
She cited a glaring example of systemic violence against minorities in Pakistan, referring to the August incident when several churches and Christian homes were set ablaze in Faisalabad district. Furthermore, she spotlighted a disturbing statistic: approximately 1,000 women from minority backgrounds are reportedly abducted, forcibly converted, and married off every year in Pakistan, as per a report from Pakistan’s own Human Rights Commission.
Turning the focus onto terrorism, India condemned Pakistan for harboring terrorists and called upon its government to take action against the perpetrators of the infamous Mumbai terror attack. Ms. Gahlot emphasized that Pakistan is home to the largest number of internationally prescribed terrorist entities and individuals globally. She urged Pakistan to take credible and verifiable actions against those responsible for the Mumbai terror attacks, which continue to await justice even after 15 years.
To ensure lasting peace in South Asia, India outlined three critical steps that Pakistan must undertake: firstly, cease cross-border terrorism and dismantle its infrastructure for terrorism immediately; secondly, relinquish Indian territories under its illegal occupation; and lastly, cease the grave and persistent human rights violations against minorities in Pakistan.
As India’s resounding stance reverberated across the General Assembly, it serves as a reminder of the nation’s unwavering commitment to its territorial integrity and human rights values.
