In the culmination of India’s year-long G20 Presidency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to host the virtual G20 Leaders Summit on Wednesday. Anticipated to be attended by major world leaders, the summit aims to address critical challenges, discuss the Delhi Declaration, and tackle gaps in global governance.

India’s G20 Sherpa, Amitabh Kant, highlighted that since the G20 Leaders’ Summit in September, the world has faced a series of events and new challenges. The virtual meeting provides a platform to enhance cooperation on development issues, global governance, sustainable development goals, and revitalizing the multilateral system.

While details of attending world leaders remain undisclosed, officials anticipate significant participation. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra emphasized that a large majority of G20 leaders are expected, refraining from prejudging discussions on geopolitical tensions. The summit is scheduled to commence at 5:30 pm.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is reported to attend, while Chinese President Xi Jinping will be represented by Premier Li Qiang. There is no confirmation regarding the participation of US President Joe Biden.

Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth expressed expectations that the summit would provide momentum and guidance on finance-related issues before handing over the G20 presidency to Brazil on December 1.
