In a significant diplomatic development, seasoned Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Indra Mani Pandey, from the 1990 batch, has been appointed as the Secretary General of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). Pandey, who currently holds the prestigious position of the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, will be the first Indian official to assume this pivotal role within BIMSTEC.

BIMSTEC, established in June 1997, is a regional organization aimed at fostering cooperation in the Bay of Bengal region. Its secretariat, headquartered in Dhaka, Bangladesh, provides a structured framework for deepening and enhancing collaboration among its member states. Originally focusing on six key sectors encompassing trade, technology, energy, transport, tourism, and fisheries, the organization expanded its purview in 2008 to include agriculture, public health, poverty alleviation, counter-terrorism, environment, culture, people-to-people interactions, and climate change.

The appointment of an Indian diplomat to the position of Secretary General signifies the critical role India plays in strengthening the grouping and underscores India’s dedication to regional cooperation within the Bay of Bengal region. Member states of BIMSTEC include Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

Indra Mani Pandey’s extensive experience in multilateral diplomacy equips him to navigate the complex diplomatic landscape of the organization effectively. His appointment marks a pivotal moment in BIMSTEC’s history, setting the stage for enhanced regional cooperation and collaboration in the years to come.
