New Delhi, In a decisive move, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has suspended 30 Opposition Members of Parliament, including prominent Congress figure Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, for the duration of the Winter Session. The suspension comes in response to MPs displaying placards during protests within the House, demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the Lok Sabha security breach.

The recent action follows the suspension of 13 MPs, including nine from the Congress, for unruly behavior and displaying placards. A united Opposition has been persistently demanding statements from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, leading to repeated adjournments.

Prime Minister Modi, in an interview, emphasized the need for a probe into the security breach rather than a parliamentary debate. The Opposition countered, accusing the BJP of avoiding a debate to shield its MP Pratap Simha, implicated in providing access passes to the intruders.

Despite demands for the reinstatement of the previously suspended MPs, Lok Sabha witnessed further turmoil today, with MPs staging protests on the Parliament steps.

The suspended MPs include DMK’s T R Baalu and Dayanidhi Maran, as well as TMC’s Saugata Roy. Additionally, three MPs—K Jayakumar, Vijay Vasanth, and Abdul Khaleque—were suspended for climbing on the Speaker’s podium.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi moved a motion for their suspension, which was adopted by a voice vote. The Lok Sabha adjourned for the day.

Rajya Sabha also experienced disruptions on the same issue, with MP Kapil Sibal asserting that public remarks by Modi and Shah were an “insult” to Parliament.
