In a recent update to the Parliament, Minister for Road, Transport, and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, revealed that a significant stretch of 43,856 kilometers of national highways is currently under the construction stage across India. These projects, with a cumulative cost exceeding Rs 9,60,103 crore, signify a robust commitment to infrastructure development.

As of October 31, the total length of national highways in the country has reached approximately 1,46,145 km, marking a substantial increase from 91,287 km as of March 31, 2014. The ongoing construction involves 1,609 projects spread across various states and Union Territories.

Gadkari highlighted the government’s proactive measures to ensure timely project completion, including streamlined land acquisition processes, pre-construction activities, and simplified approval procedures. Despite these efforts, as of November 30, 2023, 667 projects have experienced delays beyond their original completion schedule.

In addition to highway development, the minister mentioned ongoing work for the upgradation of highways in certain regions. Wayside amenities, featuring Electric Vehicle (EV) charging facilities, have also been incorporated along the national highways.

The government’s emphasis on infrastructural development aligns with its commitment to bolster economic growth and connectivity across the nation.
