JAKARTA, Prime Minister Narendra Modi graced the ASEAN-India Summit in Jakarta with his presence, delivering a compelling address that underscored the pivotal role ASEAN plays on the global stage. Themed ‘ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth,’ the Summit resonated with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of inclusive diplomacy.
PM Modi, who had the distinct honor of co-chairing this prestigious gathering, articulated the significance of ASEAN in the world’s narrative. “ASEAN matters because here everyone’s voice is heard,” he declared, emphasizing the region’s central role in fostering global growth.
Connecting the historical and geographical bonds between India and ASEAN, PM Modi articulated a shared destiny. “Our history and geography unite India and ASEAN. Along with it, our shared values, regional integration, and our shared belief in peace, prosperity, and a multipolar world also unite us,” he eloquently stated.
Notably, ASEAN serves as the linchpin of India’s Act East Policy, a fact underscored by the Prime Minister. He reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for ASEAN’s vision of centrality in ASEAN-India relations and the broader Indo-Pacific framework.
PM Modi’s visit to Indonesia also marks the culmination of a friendship that has entered its fourth decade. He extended his heartfelt congratulations to Indonesian President Joko Widodo for orchestrating this monumental Summit.
The 18th East Asia Summit (EAS), held in conjunction with the ASEAN-India Summit, further cements India’s commitment to regional cooperation and diplomacy. PM Modi’s arrival in Jakarta was marked by a ceremonial welcome at the Jakarta International Airport, where he was greeted by Minister for Women Empowerment and Child Protection, I. Gusti Ayu Bintang Darmawati.
The Indian diaspora warmly received the Prime Minister upon his arrival at his hotel, with chants of ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Modi Modi’ filling the air. PM Modi’s connection with the Indian community was evident as he engaged with them, even showcasing his musical talents by playing a traditional instrument.
