In a significant culmination to the G20 Summit held in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ceremoniously handed over the G20 presidency to Brazil, marking the conclusion of the annual summit. This pivotal moment, captured in the presence of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, signifies Brazil’s forthcoming leadership within this elite international forum ,as reported by AFP

With felicitations, Prime Minister Modi extended his best wishes to President Lula da Silva, highlighting the transition of G20 presidency to Brazil, slated to commence on December 1 of this year. This transition underscores the dynamic nature of global governance and diplomacy.

During the closing remarks of this year’s summit, President Lula da Silva emphasized the paramount importance of maintaining the unity and cohesion of the G20 despite prevailing geopolitical complexities. He articulated, “We cannot let geopolitical issues sequester the G20 agenda of discussions. We have no interest in a divided G20. We need peace and cooperation instead of conflict.”

Prime Minister Modi proposed a forward-looking approach, suggesting a virtual convening of the G20 in late November to comprehensively assess the proposals and decisions that emanated from the summit held in New Delhi. Stressing the continuity of India’s G20 presidency until November 30, he emphasized the need for swift action on the ideas and suggestions shared during the event , PTI reported

“In the last two days, you have put forward your views, given suggestions, and a number of proposals have been put forward. It is our responsibility that the suggestions that have come forth are closely looked upon as to how they can be speeded up,” PM Modi stated. “It is my proposal that we hold another session of the G20 virtually in November-end. In that session, we can review the issues that have been agreed upon during this summit. Our teams will share the details of it with all of you. I hope all of you will join this (session),” he added.

As the G20 baton transitions to Brazil, the international community awaits the next phase of global cooperation and diplomacy under their leadership. This pivot underscores the ever-evolving landscape of international relations and the imperative for unity and collaboration in addressing global challenges.

In a separate development, Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has privately conveyed her intent to exit the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) agreement with China. This decision, if realized, would mark a significant shift in Italy’s international relations landscape and is being closely monitored in the context of Italy’s ties with the United States. The BRI, initiated by China to revitalize the historic Silk Road, has garnered both praise and criticism on the global stage. Italy’s potential exit from this pact adds a new dimension to the evolving dynamics of global geopolitics.
