New Delhi- The leader of the Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav, has issued a stern warning to the Congress, expressing dissatisfaction with their recent electoral strategies. Yadav suggested that the Congress has been less than forthright in their dealings with other political parties, insinuating a lack of transparency in their alliance, the INDIA bloc. He hinted at a potential reconsideration of an alliance with the Congress for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress and the Samajwadi Party, although united at the national level, have been found fielding candidates against each other in 18 constituencies in Madhya Pradesh. This development threatens to fragment the anti-BJP vote and inadvertently benefit the state’s ruling party in the imminent assembly election.
In a press conference, Akhilesh Yadav disclosed that he had engaged in discussions with the ex-Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Kamal Nath, who currently heads the state unit of the Congress. The talks centered on assessing the performance and history of both parties in different constituencies.
“We apprised them of our previous electoral victories and the areas where we have been the runners-up,” stated Mr. Yadav. The discussions extended well into the early hours of the morning.
However, it appears that the assurances given were not met with corresponding actions. “They assured us of considering us for six seats. However, when they announced their candidate list, there was no mention of the Samajwadi Party. If we had been aware of the absence of a state-level alliance, we would not have initiated these discussions with the Congress,” Mr. Yadav remarked.
The situation escalated further after the Chief of the Uttar Pradesh unit of the Congress, Ajai Rai, made scathing remarks, asserting that the Samajwadi Party lacked a substantial support base in Madhya Pradesh and should refrain from contesting elections there. Additionally, the Congress has expressed its intention to contest all 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, exacerbating the tensions.
Akhilesh Yadav, a former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, expressed his frustration, stating, “I want to convey to the Congress that their smaller leaders should refrain from commenting on the Samajwadi Party. It appears that these Congress members are closer to the BJP. If we had known that there was no state-level alliance, we would not have sent Samajwadi Party leaders to meet Kamal Nath and Digvijaya Singh.”
While discussions with the Congress on a state-level alliance are ongoing, practical challenges have been identified as a hurdle. Kamal Nath acknowledged these difficulties, stating, “Our candidates are unwilling to contest under the Samajwadi Party symbol, even if the Samajwadi Party is willing to field our candidates with their symbol. Under such circumstances, we are faced with practical ground-level challenges.”
Nonetheless, both parties remain aligned in their common goal to defeat the BJP in the forthcoming elections. Kamal Nath expressed his gratitude to Akhilesh Yadav for his commitment to this objective.
