A Qatar court has issued a stark decree, condemning eight Indian nationals who were apprehended in the country the previous year, according to the official announcement made by the Indian government on Thursday. New Delhi expressed its profound dismay at the verdict and emphasized the gravity of this case in an official statement, pledging to address the judgment with Qatari authorities.

The specific charges against the individuals, all of whom are former Indian navy personnel employed by a private company in Qatar, have not been publicly disclosed by either the Indian government or Qatari officials. Reports from local media have suggested that the arrests, which occurred in August 2022, were related to allegations of espionage, although Reuters has been unable to independently verify these accusations.

In response to this development, the spokesperson for India’s foreign ministry remained unresponsive to inquiries seeking comment. The government’s statement on Thursday conveyed its reluctance to elaborate further on the matter due to the confidential nature of the legal proceedings.

High-ranking officials within India’s foreign ministry, including Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, have previously acknowledged the lack of clarity surrounding the precise nature of the charges brought against the eight Indian nationals.

It is worth noting that Qatar is home to a substantial expatriate Indian population, with over 800,000 Indian citizens residing and working within the country.
