In a recent exchange, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi responded to criticism from the BJP regarding dynastic politics, posing questions about the roles of prominent leaders’ family members in the BJP.
When asked about the BJP’s continuous criticism of dynastic politics, Mr. Gandhi fired back, saying, “What does Amit Shah’s son do exactly? What does Rajnath Singh’s son do?”
Gandhi further emphasized, “Last I heard, Amit Shah’s son is campaigning. Be objective. Look at the leaders in the BJP and ask yourself the question about what their children are doing. Many of them are dynasts.”
This is not the first instance where Rahul Gandhi, with a lineage of former Prime Ministers in his family, has been questioned about dynastic politics. In 2017, he acknowledged that dynastic politics is a “problem” in India, though he did not name specific individuals.
Subsequently, this exchange led to a barrage of criticism from the BJP. Amit Shah, in particular, declared Mr. Gandhi as the “unmeritorious symbol of dynastic politics.” Shah had previously made similar comments in April, rejecting the allegation of the Opposition that “democracy is in danger.”
According to Shah, it is not democracy but “parivarwad” (dynastic politics), the “autocracy of Mr. Gandhi’s family,” and casteism that pose a threat to the country.
The exchange between Rahul Gandhi and the BJP reflects the ongoing debate on dynastic politics in Indian politics.
