Sonia Gandhi, in an op-ed featured in The Hindu, offers a critique of India’s abstention from the recent United Nations vote, which called for a ceasefire in Israel. In her eloquent discourse, she strongly condemns India’s decision, highlighting that the Indian National Congress has steadfastly adhered to a principled position over the years, advocating for direct negotiations to establish a sovereign, independent, viable, and secure Palestinian state living in harmony alongside Israel.

Gandhi underscores that India’s historical stance on the Palestinian issue was reaffirmed in response to Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, pointing out that the Prime Minister’s initial statement expressed unwavering support for Israel without acknowledging Palestinian rights.

Furthermore, Sonia Gandhi expresses the Indian National Congress’s unequivocal opposition to India’s abstention from the recent United Nations General Assembly Resolution, which called for an “immediate, durable, and sustained humanitarian truce leading to a cessation of hostilities” between Israeli forces and Hamas in Gaza. In her thought-provoking piece titled ‘A War Where Humanity Is on Trial Now,’ she notes that individuals on both sides of the Israel-Palestine conflict yearn for dialogue as the only viable path forward. She laments the unfortunate partisanship displayed by influential countries, highlighting that the clamor for an end to military activities should prevail among the most powerful voices.

India’s abstention from the Jordan-drafted resolution, which called for a ceasefire in Israel but refrained from condemning Hamas’s attack, is also addressed. India’s affirmative vote for an amendment proposed by Canada, including a paragraph condemning Hamas, is mentioned. Sonia Gandhi underscores the need for a consistent stance against terrorism and a dedication to principles regardless of the context, emphasizing that India’s credibility hinges on this steadfast position.
