Maryland, USA- The monumental likeness of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the revered architect of India’s Constitution, is poised to be revealed on October 14, 2023, in Accokeek, Maryland, as part of the Ambedkar International Centre (AIC) project.

Standing tall at 19 feet, the imposing sculpture, aptly christened the ‘Statue of Equality,’ represents a significant milestone in the celebration of Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy beyond the Indian borders. Notably, this masterpiece is crafted by the eminent artist and sculptor, Ram Sutar, renowned for his work on the iconic Statue of Unity, dedicated to Sardar Patel.

The Ambedkar International Centre, encompassing 13 acres of land, is poised to be a profound testament to Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions to India’s socio-political landscape. Inarguably, this monument stands as the most colossal representation of Babasaheb Ambedkar outside the Indian subcontinent.

Born on April 14, 1891, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, affectionately known as Babasaheb, held a pivotal role as the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly’s Drafting Committee, earning him the accolade “Architect of the Indian Constitution.” Following Independence, he assumed the mantle of Law and Justice Minister in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s inaugural cabinet. Dr. Ambedkar’s tireless advocacy for the rights of Dalits and untouchables left an indelible mark on India’s social fabric.

Remarkably, the date of October 14, chosen for the statue’s unveiling, aligns with a momentous event in Dr. Ambedkar’s life. On that very day in 1956, he embraced Buddhism, a landmark event celebrated as “Dhamma Chakra Parivartan Din” by Ambedkarites.

The unveiling ceremony is expected to draw a substantial gathering, including representatives from the Ambedkarite movement and followers from across the United States and beyond. The Ambedkar International Centre envisions this memorial as a beacon of Babasaheb’s teachings, promoting the values of equality and human rights.

Distinguished dignitaries from various nations are anticipated to grace the momentous occasion on October 14, 2023, in Maryland. This monumental tribute to Dr. Ambedkar is set to etch an enduring chapter in the history of his legacy, transcending geographical boundaries.
