New Delhi, The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of a warmer winter this season, extending from December to February, with expectations of above-normal temperatures across most parts of the country. The forecast indicates a decrease in the intensity and frequency of cold waves in northern, northwestern, central, eastern, and northeastern regions.
IMD Director General M Mohapatra, unveiling the seasonal forecast, stated that above-normal minimum temperatures are likely for most parts of the country during the upcoming winter. Additionally, above-normal maximum temperatures are anticipated, except in some areas of central and northwest India, where below-normal maximum temperatures are expected.
“Similar to the November forecast, the upcoming month and the entire winter season are projected to be warmer than usual,” Mohapatra remarked.
Highlighting the trend of elevated temperatures, Mohapatra mentioned that November marked the third-highest maximum and minimum temperatures for the month since IMD began record-keeping in 1901.
“The seasonal forecast indicates that above-normal rainfall is most likely over most parts of the northwest, adjoining areas of central and east India, and some areas of extreme south peninsular India. Below-normal rainfall is likely over many parts of northeast India, north peninsular India, and adjoining areas of central India,” the forecast outlined.
As the country braces for a milder winter, the IMD’s projections offer insights into the expected climatic conditions, influencing various regions.
