New Delhi, In a poignant reflection on the ongoing student protests across American campuses concerning Israel’s invasion of Gaza, the Indian external affairs ministry made a pointed remark directed at the United States. Randhir Jaiswal, the ministry spokesperson, emphasized that countries are evaluated based on their actions at home rather than their rhetoric abroad. He underscored the importance of finding a balance between freedom of expression, responsibility, and maintaining public safety in democracies.

The protests, which have been escalating since the outbreak of the conflict in October 2023, have intensified following recent events at Columbia University, where 108 students were detained and some suspended. Demands from student groups range from greater transparency regarding financial ties with Israel to calls for universities to cease accepting funds that support military efforts.

Amidst scenes reminiscent of historical student protests, law enforcement authorities have intervened on various campuses, leading to the arrest of scores of students. Despite facing backlash from lawmakers and officials, including calls for resignations and expulsions, some politicians have voiced support for the right to peaceful protest while condemning acts of anti-Semitism.

The actions at Columbia University have catalyzed a nationwide solidarity movement, sparking discussions on the complexities of free speech, social responsibility, and the broader implications of international conflicts on domestic soil.
