The first Hindu temple in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, is now ready for inauguration, scheduled for February 14th, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to officiate. What makes this UAE’s first Hindu temple unique is the incorporation of craftsmanship from artisans in Rajasthan, showcasing their skills. The temple, spread across 27 acres near Abu Mureikha, Al Rahba, along the Dubai-Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Road, features intricate marble carvings, including depictions from Hindu scriptures.
Artisans from the villages of Makrana in Rajasthan began their creative journey in 2019, transforming marble pieces into sculptures of Hindu deities like Lord Rama and Lord Ganesha. Despite challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, their craftsmanship has found a place of honor in Abu Dhabi’s inaugural Hindu temple. The lead sculptor, Ram Kishan Singh, expressed pride and enthusiasm for contributing to a temple that symbolizes brotherhood and interfaith harmony.
The temple’s construction incorporates over 25,000 marble pieces, including pink sandstone from northern Rajasthan, ensuring durability even in the UAE’s challenging climate. The use of Italian marble adds to the grandeur of the temple, emphasizing its cultural significance. With two domes and seven spires, the architectural elements represent the seven emirates of the UAE. Each spire intricately depicts scenes from the Ramayana, Shiva Purana, Bhagavatam, and features idols of deities like Lord Jagannath, Lord Swaminarayan, Lord Venkateshwara, and Lord Ayyappa.
Covering an area of 40,000 square feet, the interior of the temple showcases craftsmanship using dense marble, creating a spiritually uplifting atmosphere. Madhusudan Patel, the construction manager, highlighted the innovative use of nano tiles and heavy glass panels for resistance against extreme temperatures.
The temple’s inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a significant event, reinforcing cultural ties and promoting unity in diversity. This milestone marks the culmination of efforts by skilled artisans from Rajasthan, turning a vision into a magnificent reality in Abu Dhabi.
