In a remarkable culmination to the over two-week-long rescue operation in Uttarakhand’s collapsed Silkyara tunnel, Australian tunnelling expert Arnold Dix has emerged as the unsung hero, garnering praise for his pivotal role in providing technical support on the ground.

Philip Green, the Australian High Commissioner to India, acknowledged Dix’s contributions, emphasizing the significance of his expertise in the successful evacuation of all 41 trapped workers. Green expressed, “This is an immense achievement. Well done to the authorities for successfully evacuating all 41 workers trapped in the tunnel in #Uttarkhand. Special commendation to Australia’s Professor Arnold Dix who provided important technical support on the ground.”

Social media echoed the appreciation for Professor Dix, not just for his technical prowess but also for his spiritual involvement in the rescue efforts. A heartening moment captured him joining a priest at the rescue site, offering prayers for the workers’ safe evacuation.

One social media user expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you so much respected @Arnolddix sir for your stunning job in rescuing all the laborers safely. Kudos to your outstanding and priceless fruitful efforts.” Another lauded Dix as “the only Australian who gave us good news this November.”

Arnold Dix, in an earlier update on the rescue operation, shared a perspective rooted in reverence for nature. He described the mountain as a protective force, akin to an ancient story, ensuring the safety of those trapped inside the tunnel. “It’s the will of the mountain which will decide when and from which door those people come out,” he remarked.

Norway’s Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, also extended congratulations to the rescue team and expressed relief at the positive outcome of the challenging operation. “Congratulations to the rescue team, and all friends and family members of those who were trapped. A relieving end to a difficult operation. We wish for good health for all those involved,” Ambassador Stener shared on social media.

The Silkyara tunnel collapse occurred on November 12, trapping 41 laborers inside. The successful breakthrough was achieved on Tuesday at 7.05 pm when the drilling through the rubble was complete, and an 800-900 mm pipe tunnel was pushed through the debris.
