The inception of National Engineers’ Day dates back to 1968 when the Government of India made the decision to commemorate the birth anniversary of the illustrious Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. This visionary engineer is hailed as one of India’s greatest minds, and this day serves as a tribute to his enduring legacy. Additionally, it serves as a profound acknowledgment of engineers’ tireless efforts in nurturing India’s growth and development.

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was a trailblazing figure in the realm of engineering, whose indomitable spirit and vision left an indelible mark on India’s infrastructure development. His contributions encompassed the design and construction of dams, intricate irrigation networks, and numerous other projects that played a pivotal role in modernizing and advancing India. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of engineering science, he was honored with the prestigious Bharat Ratna award in 1955.
One of Sir Visvesvaraya’s most notable achievements was the design of automatic weir water floodgates, a feat that enhanced the storage capacity of the Khadakwasla Reservoir near Pune. His visionary irrigation system transformed the Deccan Plateau, further solidifying his status as an engineering luminary. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in the design of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysuru, leaving an indelible mark on India’s infrastructure.
Sir Visvesvaraya’s contributions extended beyond engineering, as he served as the Diwan of Mysore, where he pioneered the development of armored, bullet-proof vehicles for World War II as a board member of Tata Steels.
