In a robust display of solidarity, tens of thousands of supporters of Israel gathered in Washington DC on Tuesday, asserting their backing for Israel’s stance against Hamas, rejecting calls for a ceasefire, and condemning the global surge in antisemitism. The National Mall witnessed an impressive assembly of demonstrators, bedecked in Israeli flags and brandishing placards, amidst stringent security measures and under a pristine blue sky.

Esteemed speakers, including Israeli President Isaac Herzog, former Soviet dissident Natan Sharnasky, and prominent US congressional figures like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, addressed the fervent crowds. Herzog, speaking via video link from Jerusalem, decried the attacks on Jews, labeling it “an embarrassment to all civilized people and nations.”

Notably, the resounding applause of the day resonated for the recently appointed Republican House Speaker, Mike Johnson, who firmly declared, “These calls for a ceasefire are outrageous.” The crowd echoed his sentiment with chants of “No ceasefire!”

While acknowledging concerns over the escalating death toll in Gaza, attributed largely to Israel’s military operation against Hamas, many attendees pointedly placed blame on Hamas. The sentiment was reflected in remarks by Judah Klausner, a composer from New York, and Paul Stewart, a retired attorney from Vermont, who expressed reservations about a ceasefire in light of ongoing threats from Hamas.

Organized by diverse pro-Israel US Jewish groups, the event drew participation from progressive outfits critical of the previous Israeli government. J Street and the Peace Now movement were among the ideological cross-section present, emphasizing a nuanced perspective within the pro-Israel community.

However, the decision to include evangelical pastor John Hagee, known for controversial remarks, sparked criticism from progressive factions. Despite this, the massive gathering, estimated at around 100,000 by Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, encompassed a range of supporters, including Christian Zionists expressing solidarity.

Jeffries delivered a pointed message, emphasizing Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas terror and calling for support in defeating the organization decisively. The event underscored the diverse viewpoints within the US regarding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
