Mumbai,  Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has joined a chorus of celebrities promoting domestic tourism amidst the ongoing controversy between India and the Maldives over the promotion of Lakshadweep. Singh took to Twitter, urging Indians to explore the diverse landscapes and rich culture of their own country, particularly emphasizing Indian islands.

In a tweet, Singh stated, “This year let’s make 2024 about exploring India and experiencing our culture. There is so much to see and explore across the beaches and the beauty of our country. Chalo India let’s #exploreindianislands. Chalo bharat dekhe.”

The call for domestic tourism comes as a response to the recent debate sparked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep. The controversy escalated when Maldives minister Abdulla Mahzoom Majid claimed that India was diverting its focus from the Maldives by promoting Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist spot, triggering the hashtag #BoycottMaldives on social media.

Prominent celebrities, including Sachin Tendulkar, Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, and John Abraham, have actively supported domestic tourism. Akshay Kumar responded to alleged racist comments from Maldivian public figures and urged Indians to explore Indian islands, stating, “Let us decide to #ExploreIndianIslands and support our own tourism.”

John Abraham highlighted Indian hospitality and the philosophy of “Atithi Devo Bhava” (The guest is God), recommending Lakshadweep as an ideal destination. Salman Khan applauded Prime Minister Modi’s presence in Lakshadweep, expressing pride that such pristine beaches are in India.

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar shared memories from Sindhudurg, emphasizing India’s beautiful coastlines and pristine islands. The promotion of domestic tourism has gained momentum on social media, with many advocating for exploring Indian islands despite the Maldives being a top destination for thousands of Indians in the past year.
