Arsenal left fuming as Newcastle inflict first defeat

Arsenal’s impressive run of unbeaten matches in the Premier League came to an abrupt end with a bitter 1-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United in Saturday’s late fixture. The match, characterized by its intense and physical nature at St James’ Park, saw Arsenal squander the opportunity to join Manchester City at the top of the league standings.

The decisive moment in the match came through an Anthony Gordon goal that endured despite a protracted VAR review. Gabriel Magalhaes, an Arsenal defender, claimed he was fouled by his Brazilian international compatriot, Joelinton, just before the ball fell to Gordon, who hammered it into an unguarded net. VAR meticulously examined various aspects, including whether the ball had crossed the touchline, if a foul had occurred, and whether there was an offside. Ultimately, the goal was allowed, leading to Arsenal’s disappointment.

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, vented his frustration at the outcome, expressing his outrage, “It’s embarrassing what happened, how this goal stands. In the Premier League – this league that we say is the best in the world. I’ve been in this country for 20 years, and now I feel ashamed. It’s a disgrace.”

The match also laid bare Arsenal’s vulnerability in the absence of a world-class striker, as they struggled to mount a response against a makeshift Newcastle defense. Following this result, Arsenal remains in the third position with 24 points after 11 matches, trailing Manchester City by three points, while Newcastle stands sixth with 20 points.

**Nottingham Forest Ends Winless Streak**

On Sunday, Nottingham Forest halted a challenging six-match winless streak with a commanding 2-0 victory over Aston Villa in the Midlands derby. This defeat dashed Villa’s hopes of securing a top-four position in the league. Ola Aina and Orel Mangala were the heroes for Forest, each scoring spectacular goals from distance.

Within the opening five minutes, Forest seized the lead as right-back Ola Aina unleashed a low drive from a considerable range, finding the bottom corner of the net. It marked Aina’s inaugural goal for the club.

Villa’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, endured a frustrating moment early in the second half when he tried to save Orel Mangala’s powerful shot with a single hand. Unfortunately, the ball managed to bounce over the goal line, extending Villa’s woes.

This victory brought an end to Villa’s six-match unbeaten streak, leaving Unai Emery’s side in fifth place, five points adrift of league leaders Manchester City. Nottingham Forest, on the other hand, celebrated their first home clean sheet of the season and ascended to the 12th position.
