In the run-up to the announcement of the squad for the imminent three-match series against Afghanistan, led by Ajit Agarkar, all eyes are on the prospect of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma returning to T20I action. The two stalwarts have been absent from the T20I scene since November 2022, marked by India’s semifinal exit in the World Cup against England in Australia.

Their focus shifted to ODIs, especially with the ongoing WTC cycle, leading them to miss subsequent T20 contests against Australia and South Africa. As discussions circulate about their participation in the T20 World Cup in June, co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies, the cricketing fraternity awaits confirmation on their involvement.

Former India chief selector MSK Prasad emphasized the significance of having key players participate in the series against Afghanistan, considering the competitive nature of the Afghan side. Speaking on Star Sports, Prasad advocated for Kohli and Rohit’s inclusion, especially since they have declared their availability for the T20 World Cup.

“I would definitely want our main players playing in this series. Afghanistan is a very competitive side, and since they have declared themselves completely available for the tournament, why not start now. I don’t think selectors will think otherwise,” mentioned Prasad.

The series, scheduled between January 11 and 17, will unfold across Mohali, Indore, and Bengaluru. Cricket enthusiasts anticipate the formal announcement of the squad and are eager to witness the return of Kohli and Rohit to T20I action.
