‘Phenomenal’ capitan Cummins secures moment of glory

In a remarkable display of leadership, Pat Cummins, an unconventional captain, played a pivotal role as Australia secured their sixth World Cup triumph, defeating India in a sensational match on Sunday.

Fast bowlers like Cummins are typically hesitant choices for captaincy due to concerns about the added workload affecting their performance. However, Cummins, unexpectedly thrust into the captain’s role just before the 2021/22 Ashes after Tim Paine’s sudden resignation, led Australia to a 4-0 series win over England.

In June of this year, Cummins orchestrated Australia’s impressive 209-run victory over India in the World Test Championship final at The Oval.

At 30, Cummins doesn’t conform to the traditional ‘macho’ image of an Australian captain, often associated with abrasive skippers like Ian Chappell, Allan Border, and Steve Waugh. Despite being accused of plotting against former coach Justin Langer, Cummins has demonstrated resilience and leadership qualities.

Known for his outstanding bowling record, Cummins, with 239 wickets in 55 Tests and 141 wickets in 88 ODIs, is far from a soft touch on the field. His determination was evident when he upheld an appeal, leading Australia to victory in an Ashes Test despite controversy.

Cummins, a member of the ‘Cricket for Climate’ group, has faced criticism labeled as “woke,” a term he dismisses as meaningless. Beyond the cricketing realm, he was accused of influencing Cricket Australia to sever ties with energy company Alinta, a claim both he and his superiors deny.

Teammate Mitchell Starc praised Cummins, stating, “Pat Cummins was phenomenal, I think he’s been phenomenal all tournament with his decision making.”

Despite setbacks in the initial matches, Cummins’ calm leadership guided Australia to a record-extending sixth World Cup title, showcasing resilience and strategic prowess.
