‘We have 75% decided…’: Rohit Sharma rues Shami’s absence in giving Mukesh vs Prasidh verdict for 1st SA Test

Centurion: As India gears up for the 1st Test against South Africa, scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Captain Rohit Sharma addressed the media on Monday, shedding light on the challenges posed by the absence of experienced pacer Mohammed Shami.

Shami, currently recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the 2023 ODI World Cup, will be a notable omission from the two-match Test series. Rohit Sharma acknowledged the veteran’s substantial contributions to the team over the years, emphasizing the challenge of finding a suitable replacement. “It’s a big miss, but someone will come in place of him, try and fill in that role, and it will not be easy, but we have confidence,” remarked Sharma.

The absence of Shami has triggered a crucial decision-making process regarding the third seamer in the playing XI. The contenders for this role are Mukesh Kumar and Prasidh Krishna. Mukesh, displaying similarities to Shami with his upright seam and precise accuracy, made his debut earlier this year in the West Indies series. On the other hand, Prasidh, yet to earn his maiden Test cap, brings a different dimension to the game with his height and ability to extract bounce.

Addressing this selection dilemma, Rohit Sharma remained reserved about revealing the final decision. He stated that the team has made 75% of the decisions, with the remaining 25% contingent on the pitch analysis scheduled for Tuesday. “Prasidh (Krishna) extracts a lot of bounce due to his height, and Mukesh can swing the ball. We were supposed to look at the pitch today and decide whether we want someone to bowl up or back. We have 75 percent decided, and the rest 25 percent we would tomorrow,” explained the skipper.

Beyond the third seamer predicament, Rohit Sharma faces additional decisions, including whether to include spinners Ashwin and Jadeja or opt for an extra seamer like Shardul Thakur. Considerations for these choices include weather conditions and the historical performance of players at the venue.
