In a farewell address on his last working day, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul emphasized the role of judges as custodians of justice, distancing them from being mere “fund collectors” for the government. Addressing concerns, Justice Kaul stressed the significance of principles of law over case stakes and urged fellow judges to be bold and committed to justice administration.

Highlighting the importance of reducing adjournments, Justice Kaul urged courts to function efficiently, acknowledging the challenges litigants face. He advocated for a stronger bar and bench collaboration to protect judicial independence.

Justice Kaul, known for supporting freedom of expression and artistic creativity, also called for tolerance of diverse opinions. As he bids farewell after more than 22 years of service, his impactful judgments have contributed significantly to constitutional courts’ jurisprudential wealth.

Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud praised Justice Kaul’s commitment to justice and expressed gratitude for their longstanding friendship. Attorney General R Venkataramani commended Justice Kaul’s recent call for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, marking a significant step in constitutional jurisprudence.

As Justice Kaul concludes his judicial journey, he leaves behind a legacy of landmark decisions that have shaped India’s legal landscape.
