Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the chief coach of the Indian senior men’s cricket team, replacing Rahul Dravid. The announcement was made by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah on social media. Dravid’s tenure concluded after the T20 World Cup 2024.

Gambhir, who has taken on this significant responsibility, was welcomed by Jay Shah with much enthusiasm. Shah highlighted Gambhir’s close observation of modern cricket’s rapid evolution and expressed confidence in Gambhir’s ability to lead Indian cricket forward, given his career-long perseverance and outstanding performance in various roles.

Shah further emphasized that Gambhir’s clear vision for Team India, combined with his vast experience, makes him well-prepared to take on this exciting and highly demanding coaching role. The BCCI fully supports him on this new journey. Another contender for the position was WV Raman, former coach of the Indian women’s team. Raman was appointed in December 2018 but was replaced by Ramesh Powar in May 2021.

Jay Shah’s Good Wishes to Rahul Dravid

Jay Shah extended his best wishes to former coach Rahul Dravid, expressing heartfelt gratitude for his highly successful tenure. Under Dravid’s guidance, Team India emerged as a formidable force in all formats, including winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Shah lauded Dravid’s strategic acumen, consistent efforts to nurture talent, and exemplary leadership, which fostered a culture of excellence within the team. Dravid’s legacy is a unified team that stands together and celebrates each other’s success despite challenges.

Team India on Zimbabwe Tour

Currently, the Indian team is on a tour of Zimbabwe, participating in a five-match T20 series. Both teams have won one match each. India faced a defeat in the first match but bounced back to secure a 100-run victory in the second, with young opener Abhishek Sharma scoring a century off 47 balls. The Indian team, featuring many young players, is captained by Shubman Gill, with VVS Laxman acting as the coach. Gautam Gambhir will join the team for the Sri Lanka tour later this month.
