Markedly, the United Kingdom’s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) has been granted a substantial funding allocation of £85 million to elevate its Vulcan system to the pinnacle of laser supremacy worldwide.
The groundbreaking creation, christened the Vulcan 20-20, is currently under construction at the prestigious Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Central Laser Facility (CLF) located in the hallowed precincts of Oxfordshire. The appellation “Vulcan 20-20” finds its genesis in the laser’s unparalleled capabilities, boasting a primary laser beam with an astonishing energy output of 20 Petawatts (PW), in conjunction with eight high-energy beams capable of yielding up to 20 Kilojoules (KJ).

Presently, the preeminent laser within CLF’s arsenal is the Vulcan laser, celebrated for its diverse utility, particularly within the realm of plasma physics.
